Some of you may remember my unfortunate thread about Final Fantasy X International + Japanese Voice. To summarize, it's a version of FFX International where some genius hacker types went through the entire game and replaced the English voice files with the original Japanese ones. The result is a game that has been 'undubbed' since it is otherwise identical to the regular FFX International, except with Japanese voice acting. FFX International has English and Japanese subtitles already included in the game, so you just pick the English subtitles when starting a new game and play it like a subtitled anime.
Well, it seems this idea has started to catch on and one by one, various JRPGs which were only available in this country with (occasionally craptastic) dubbed English voice acting have been hacked by various saintlike individuals to replace the English actors with the original Japanese ones. They just take the English North American versions of the games and go through all the game files to replace the English voice files with the original Japanese ones. It's probably slow work and requires a certain amount of technical finesse (the guy who did Final Fantasy XII complains for a whole paragraph in the readme file about mismatched dialogue timings) but the result is an English language game which has the original Japanese dialogue restored. The people who are doing this are going so far as to rip out the English FMV cutscenes and replacing them with ripped Japanese cutscenes which have had subtitles added to them in much the same way as fansubbed anime. Persona 3 is an example of this.
So, if you are interested in playing games with the original Japanese voice acting, you can find the UNDUB versions of the games at most eyepatches and bottles of rum websites. Please buy the games first and then download the UNDUBs afterwards. If you don't support the companies that bring these games to American shores, they'll just stop doing it. Fansubs are killing the American anime market, and I would rather not see UDSUBs kill the American JRPG market.
UNDUBs I have found:
Final Fantasy X International
Final Fantasy XII
Persona 3
Xenosaga Episode III
Radiata Stories
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Tales of the Abyss
This is a relatively recent phenonemom, hence the limited selection. No doubt as this idea continues to gain momentum, more groups will form around the production of UNDUBs and there will be more releases. Until that time, you can enjoy hearing Ashe's and Vaan's Japanese voices, which I personally greatly prefer to their English ones. Have fun!
